On April 9, 2020, the team of Li Shirui, Zhang Nuofu and Liu Chunli of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University and SKLRD published a paper titled "Attention should be paid to venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in the management of COVID-19" in Lancet Haematol(IF=11.99). The study pointed out that attention should be paid to venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in the management of COVID-19.

This study includes 1,099 laboratory-verified COVID-19 patients from 31 provinces and regions across the country, and excluded 73 patients with incomplete medical history. Among the remaining 1,026 patients, 40% of them were found to be with high-risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) upon admission through Padua thrombus prediction scoring and assessment. Compared with patients with low-risk of VTE, patients with high-risk of VTE are comparatively advanced in age --15% of such patients are over 70 years old, while only 3% of patients are with low-risk of VTE. In addition, patients with high-risk of VTE are subject to high proportions of bleeding (11% VS 1%), admission to ICU (12% VS 1%), invasive mechanical ventilation (14% VS 1%), death from COVID-19 or its complications (3% VS 0%).
